Heart of Haiti Birthday Giveaway ~ Feel-Good Shopping This Season #heartofHaiti

written by Rebecca E. Parsons

UPDATE WINNER ANNOUNCED

Jules from A Little Bite of Life
I love the nesting leaves collection, but everything in the Heart of Haiti shop is so beautiful!

#Heartofhaiti bowl If you are looking for a special gift for someone this holiday season, I would encourage you to give back and shop Macy’s “Heart of Haiti” collection which includes quilts, metalwork, ceramics, wood-carvings, paintings and jewelry. Saturday 11/12 is my birthday. To mark the occasion, I will be giving away the beautiful papier-mache bowl at left… see below…

This beautiful handmade steel frame just became part of my ever-growing art collection. The elegance and beauty of a handcrafted piece always appeals to my heart. Knowing that it was created by a Haitian artist after the earthquake in order to regain some semblance of normalcy and earn a living, appeals to my heart and soul.

heart of haiti frame #heartofhaiti Macy's

The Heart of Haiti Songbird Frame  stands 9″ x 11.5″ and holds a 4″ x 6″ image. The card reads, “The singing of the birds is a celestial language attracting the presence of angels.” The piece is painstakingly cut, hammered and varnished by hand of steel from recycled barrels. Each one-of-a-kind piece has a rustic beauty wrought by Haiti’s master craftsman. It is surprisingly lightweight for steel and sells for $25 at Macy’s. It includes a Certificate of Authenticity and is signed by the artisan.

One year ago Macy’s launched “The Heart of Haiti,” to bring trade and aid to the earthquake-devastated country. These traditional Haitian artisan home décor products created by Haitian artisan survivors are available in 25 Macy’s stores and on macys.com. Heart of Haiti is a “Trade, Not Aid” initiative launched by artist and social entrepreneur, Willa Shalit, The Clinton Bush Haiti Fund and Macy’s.

Macy's Heart of Haiti #HeartofHaiti

Haiti’s ancient culture includes a vast diversity of traditional, handmade products such as hand-tooled serving trays and up-cycled oil drums from the blacksmith community in Croix des Bouquets, the work in papier-mache from Carnival Jacmel artists, and a women’s quilting cooperative in Cite Soleil.

Hi Rebecca! As you know I work for Everywhere in supporting Heart of Haiti. We so appreciate your post! Happy almost birthday (btw you can’t possibly be 60…with your enthusiasm you might be pushing 25). Just a little extra info, the bowl for the giveaway is pretty true to the image. All the bowls are hand painted and unique, but the variations are slight and in the small details. Thanks again for all the great information and having a Heart for Haiti!
